Artist Statement
My photography collection "IN BETWEEN" will consist of 50 unique storefronts and reflections captured over seven years in the streets of Miami and New York City. Ever since I was young, I've always been captivated by the Storefronts. Storefronts depict the glamor, the beauty, and the perfection I always dreamed of. Pretending to be living in the storefronts while hiding my insecurities, contradictions, and real feelings gave me comfort.
My journey started photographing the glamorous storefronts, and a few years into it, I realized that, in reality, I was always looking for the reflections with all their imperfections.
People in reflection are usually rushing, not living the moment, like me. When you get older, time speeds up. Could it be because we are distracted… by storefronts and their glamor? Missing out on moments due to expectations, social media, streaming video, and smartphones is how we live, and I feel that it makes us disconnected. We don't feel content because we are in-between, not belonging to the storefront nor the reflection fully.
My photographs reflect how a split second and a slight tilt of the camera changes the entire story, which will never be written again. Positioning myself between the visible and unseen moves me and makes me feel I am not alone. In moments like this, time does slow down ever so much, which reveals the importance of staying in the moment with your true self.
